MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT PHOENIX CONCERT
Phoenix is a band from Versailles, France who released their first album in 2000, four years after their current lineup was finally in place (guitarist, Laurent Brancowitz joined after formerly being part of band called Darlin‘ with the members of Daft Punk). Last night, I saw [READ ON]
MY VOTE FOR BEST HAIR IN THE INDUSTRY, KING CHARLES
Never before have I had so much trouble describing what sort of music a certain musician plays. King Charles, an artist I recently saw perform live, mixes so many different genres that there really is no way of defining him. I’ll do my best though. He manages to combine spoken, folk, and rock vocals, forming a “freak folk” sound. He’s a demon on the guitar, and is amazing at interacting with the crowd. King Charles is the perfect example of [READ ON]
ANIMAL NAMES TAKE OVER
I always like to make music playlists that roughly link the songs with one another. One of the most obscure groupings I’ve ever made has to be one I did recently for musicians with names that have to do with animals. This was easier than you would think! So many artists name their bands after animals, or random things that I can associate with wildlife. As I searched through my playlist, many artists made the cut. Here are three. [READ ON]
NOAH (NOT JONAH) AND THE WHALE
FUN.’S AIM AND IGNITE

It’s almost the end of October, which means that Christmas (and Hanukkah) and the New Year are quickly approaching. This also means figuring out my favorite albums of 2009. One album that gets the instant “nod” is Aim and Ignite by the New York-based band, fun. Former lead singer of The Format, Nate Ruess, takes the reigns of this trio, a band that exemplifies the term enthusiasm.
Their music is passionate, cheerful, and [READ ON]
TEGAN AND SARA
I’m the type of guy that loves girl singers. A rock band that has female vocals adds an entirely new element that is unparalleled (in my mind). A certain duo that can “rock your socks off” is Tegan and Sara, a set of identical twins (twins!) from Canada. Their music has been featured on the soundtracks of various TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy, The Hills, and One Tree Hill. It’s an understatement to say these chicks are badass. They’re intense lyrics, focused instruments, and interwoven vocals have the ability to energize any listener. I feel cheated by the fact that I’ve only been listening to them for just over a year (thanks Alessandra!). [READ ON]
I’M FROM BARCELONA
Well, no, I’m not really from Barcelona. That’s just the name of a great band I’ve been listening to for the past few days. They remind me a lot of Beat Radio, who I previously posted about. I’m From Barcelona, unlike Beat Radio, is a foreign band from Sweden (not Spain) that uses a wide variety of instruments to achieve their unique sound. From the moment I began listening to them, it was clear I would be writing about their music. Their music offers instant gratification to listeners, evoking strong emotions through memorable lyrics that lead singer, Emanuel Lundgren, delivers brilliantly. Songs range from mournful ballads to cheerful sing-a-longs, yet neither outshines the other. [READ ON]
DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE (IS NOT AN EMO BAND)
For those who have never heard of Death Cab for Cutie, do not be turned off by their dark, melancholy band name. In fact, the lead singer of this Seattle-based band, Ben Gibbard, merely named the band after a song that can be heard in The Beatles‘ film, Magical Mystery Tour. Believe it or not, songs do not actually revolve around death or cabs! Now that I have convinced you to look past the name of the band, it is time to mention more important news. As I talked about in my post about Venice, I was able to meet the music supervisor of the upcoming Twilight film. I’ll give you one guess to who sings the film’s lead single. Yes! Death Cab for Cutie! The song, which has been out for quite a while now, is called “Meet Me on the Equinox”, and isn’t bad. While the song is not one of my favorites from them, it is definitely worth mentioning. Here’s the brand new music video for it. [READ ON]
A LITTLE BUT OF INDIE FOLK
Due to today’s much anticipated release of Sufjan Stevens‘ album Run Rabbit Run (which was very disappointing due to its lack of lyrics), I have decided to devote an entire post to some of my favorite indie folk artists. The genre is really something I have grown to love ever since my emo-listening days. It’s amazing how many different instruments these bands have managed to fit into their repertoire. [READ ON]
